Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

A Damsel in Distress is P. G. Wodehouse at full comic speed: a romantic muddle of mistaken identity, aristocratic interference, theatrical timing, and gloriously unnecessary complications. When American composer George Bevan encounters a mysterious young woman who takes refuge in his taxicab, he is instantly drawn into a world of country houses, family schemes, romantic confusion, and social absurdity. The young woman is Maud Marsh, and the household around her is determined to manage her future rather more aggressively than she intends to allow.First published in 1919, A Damsel in Distress stands outside the Jeeves and Wooster books but belongs unmistakably to Wodehouse's comic world: light, elegant, quick-moving, and built on the pleasure of seeing every misunderstanding made worse before it is made right. The novel's country-house setting, romantic entanglements, musical-comedy energy, and expertly arranged reversals make it a strong choice for readers of classic British humour, romantic comedy, early twentieth-century fiction, and Wodehouse's non-series novels. The story was also adapted for stage and screen, including a 1937 musical film, a useful sign of how naturally its plot lends itself to performance and comic movement.
