The Balkan Region of Kosovo, near Albania, was in the Middle Ages a center of exceptional artistic activity. Closely bound to the sea and to European trading routes, this territory was deeply influenced by Byzantine lands to the east, resulting in a rich fusion of Eastern and Western styles.
