Over the past 50 years, cervical cancer detection by Papanicolaou smear exami­ nation has undergone a gradual evolution, but more recently, a revolution. Drs. Rana and Syed Hoda have positioned themselves at the forefront of this metamor­ phosis; the accurate, economical, and rapid detection procedure is now dubbed "the Pap test" for cervical cancer screening. During this time, many mysteries of cervi­ cal cancer have been unraveled. The rriononuclears are the precancerous cells, and the toxins include human papilloma virus (HPV) as the major culprit. Papanicolaou's concept that "mononuclears reacted to the cancerous toxins in a way as to make them cytologically recognized" remains prophetic and true! Cervi­ cal specimens are collected in fluids instead of glass slides. Cells are processed utilizing propriety machines; morphological alterations are detected either manu­ ally or by morphometric techniques. Specimens are tested for the "toxins"-HPV. Changing times have required redefining the cytomorphological features and an accurate recognition of developing cervical cancer in all its variegates. The Bethesda System along with HPV type recognition has become the "standard of care." Drs. Rana and Syed Hoda are highly respected in the pathology community.
