Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

The Papal Navy, Volume VIII: The Auxiliary Roman Squadron at Candia and the Morea, 1644-1699. This bilingual Warships & Navies edition preserves 541 original-language facsimile pages from Storia della marina pontificia, then frames the volume in English for collectors, researchers, and naval-history readers. This volume restores an important segment of Storia della marina pontificia, one of the major documentary works in non-English naval historiography. It also provides scholarly back-of-book indexes of persons, places, events, and ships, turning the facsimile into a practical research tool for tracing actors, theaters, campaigns, and vessels. This edition also includes Most Important Passages Translated, a curated set of twenty substantial excerpts rendered into modern English with a trace of period flavor, so readers can enter Storia della marina pontificia through its decisive scenes, arguments, and descriptions before or alongside the facsimile. In the realm of naval history, few works encapsulate the intricate tapestry of maritime power as vividly as Alberto Guglielmotti's "La squadra ausiliaria della marina romana, a Candia ed alla Morea, dal 1644 al 1699." This eighth volume in the series dedicated to the Papal Navy offers an unparalleled insight into the operations and significance of the auxiliary squadron during a critical period in the Mediterranean. Our decision to bring this classic into an English-facing market stems from the recognition that the Papal Navy's role in shaping naval dynamics during the 17th century remains underexplored in English-language scholarship. This edition honors the original Italian text, preserving Guglielmotti's meticulous research and narrative style rather than replacing it with a contemporary translation. We believe that the authenticity of the source material is paramount, allowing readers to engage with the historical context and linguistic nuances that a mere translation might dilute. The facsimile presentation serves not only as a scholarly resource but also as a testament to the craftsmanship of 19th-century historiography, inviting readers to appreciate the depth of Guglielmotti's scholarship in its original form.Accompanying the Italian text, our English apparatus provides invaluable context and analytical insights that enhance the reader's understanding of the work. This includes a comprehensive introduction that situates the Papal Navy within the broader currents of Mediterranean naval history, as well as an analytical index that facilitates navigation through the text. Such additions are designed to bridge the linguistic divide while respecting the integrity of the original work, ensuring that both scholars and collectors can derive maximum value from this edition.
