Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

The first collection of A. J. Raffles stories, introducing the gentleman thief whose exploits reframe the conventions of late Victorian crime fiction.First published in 1899, The Amateur Cracksman presents a series of interconnected stories centred on A. J. Raffles, a figure of social standing who conducts his criminal activities with discretion, intelligence, and a calculated sense of risk. Narrated by his companion Bunny Manders, the stories unfold through a sequence of carefully executed thefts, each shaped by planning, improvisation, and the pressures of circumstance.Hornung's work is notable for its reversal of the traditional detective narrative. Rather than pursuing the criminal, the reader is placed in the position of the criminal himself, observing both method and motive from within. The stories combine elements of suspense with an understated tone, situating Raffles within the social world he both inhabits and exploits. The collection established one of the enduring figures of crime fiction and remains a defining example of the gentleman thief tradition.
