2024 Winner in four contest: Gold Medal for Autobiography, National Indie Excellence Awards; New Mexico - Arizona Book Awards for Autobiography & Memoir; Distinguished Favorite in the Career Category, Independent Press Awards; and Finalist in Autobiography, Book Excellence Awards -- For forty years Neill McKee traveled the world making documentary films and leading communication programs for organizations that mattered most - CUSO and the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) of Canada; UNICEF; Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore; and in Washington D.C. the Academy for Educational Development, which joined with FHI360. He worked across Latin America, the Caribbean, Asia, the South Pacific, Africa, and Russia. He lived in and managed teams in Bangladesh, Kenya, Uganda, Moscow and Washington D.C. He led the creation of Meena -- an animated South Asian girl whose stories spread across South Asia promoting girls' education and challenging the attitudes that hold female children back. This was followed by Sara -- Meena's adolescent counterpart for Africa: two engaging characters that reached millions of children and communities across two continents. Filled with compelling dialogue, vivid descriptions of people and places, humor and poignancy in equal measure, plus over 200 photographs (ebook and hardcover in color), My University of the World is the memoir of a man who spent his career doing work that mattered -- and who never stopped learning from the world that taught him. For readers of international development memoir; CUSO, IDRC, and UNICEF insider stories; documentary filmmaking autobiography; global affairs nonfiction; North American memoir; and anyone who has ever believed that a person's work can help change the world. The final volume of Neill McKee's trilogy -- following Kid on the Go! and Finding Myself in Borneo. The three books can be enjoyed in any order or as standalones.
