Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

In 1894, Ukrainian scholar Mykola Sumtsov analysed two important 19th-century collections of Ukrainian folk tales, recorded by Polish scholars Oskar Kolberg and Józefa Moszyńska. His study is available in English for the first time.

Exploring Ukrainian Folk Tales presents Sumtsov's close reading of these collections, tracing recurring heroes, magical objects, and impossible tasks, and situating them within the wider European folk tale tradition.

For readers who love fairy tales, the book includes eight detailed indices covering:

- Popular folk tale heroes and heroines- Magical objects and their powers- Impossible tasks and how they were solved- Methods of punishment and reward- And four more, covering motifs, animals, transformations, and settings

For scholars, the volume offers a rare English window into 19th-century Ukrainian folkloristics: Sumtsov's comparative method, his engagement with the Kolberg and Moszyńska collections, and analysis that anticipates later tale-type classification systems still used today.

An extensive bibliography, notes, and index are included.

Exploring Ukrainian Folk Tales is the fourth book in Sova Books' Ukrainian Scholar Library, a series bringing the work of Ukrainian scholars on folklore, history, and culture to English readers for the first time. Also in the series: The Story of Pysanka, A Collection of Ukrainian Spells, Notes on Ukrainian Demonology, and Death. Funeral. Afterlife.
