Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

A Robust and Influential First World War Bomber. The Friedrichshafen G.III is a fascinating subject for anyone interested in the engineering and operational development of First World War bombers. Entering service in early 1917 as the successor to the G.II, it combined a larger airframe with more powerful 260 hp Mercedes D.IVa engines, giving it a substantial bomb-carrying capability of up to 1,000 kg. The design reflected valuable operational experience. An auxiliary nose wheel reduced the dangerous tendency to overturn during landing, while later G.IIIa modifications improved single-engine handling and added defensive armament against night fighters. Its robust construction, reliability, load-carrying capacity, and relatively low accident rate made it popular with crews. Used primarily in nocturnal operations on the Western Front, the G.III undertook tactical bombing and limited strategic raids, including attacks on targets around Paris. Although it lacked the range for raids on Britain, its wartime service demonstrated the effectiveness of a dependable medium bomber. Overall, the Friedrichshafen G.III represents a successful balance of engineering practicality, payload capability, defensive improvements, and operational reliability, making it an important and rewarding aircraft to study in the technical history of First World War aviation.
