An important and exceptionally detailed contemporary record of the military operations conducted in China during the Boxer Rebellion. Originally compiled by Major Evelyn William Meadows Norie of the Intelligence Staff of the British Contingent, China Field Force, the work was published by the War Office in 1903 after being considerably revised, edited and expanded by the Intelligence Department. The account begins with the rise of the Boxer Secret Society and the growing violence directed against foreigners and Christian missions in the northern provinces. It then follows the increasingly serious military crisis, including the dispatch of the international forces, the operations of the British contingent and the movements of the Eight-Nation Alliance. Particular attention is given to the relief of the Foreign Legations in Peking, whose siege became the central episode of the campaign. The narrative records the various expeditions and operations undertaken to reach the besieged legations, including the difficulties of movement, communications and supply encountered by the allied forces. The book continues beyond the relief of Peking, covering subsequent operations, the stabilisation of the situation and the negotiations that ultimately brought the conflict to an end. It concludes with the peace settlement and the withdrawal of the greater part of the Allied forces from China. As an official military history prepared by officers closely connected with the campaign, the work provides an unusually detailed insight into the planning, conduct and administration of the operations. Its Intelligence Department origins are reflected in the systematic approach to events, movements and military dispositions, making it particularly valuable to students of the campaign and serious military historians. The original 1903 edition is now excessively rare, making modern reprints especially welcome. Combining contemporary detail with the authority of an official War Office account, this is an indispensable reference for anyone interested in the Boxer Rebellion, the defence and relief of the Peking Legations, or British military operations in China at the beginning of the twentieth century.
