Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

Between 1950 and 1953, Britain contributed the second-largest national contingent to the United Nations forces after the United States. Approximately 56,000-60,000 British personnel served in Korea, experiencing some of the most intense fighting of the conflict. The scale of the losses is reflected in the figures recorded in this volume: approximately 1,078 deaths, 2,674 wounded, and around 1,060 personnel reported missing or taken prisoner. These figures include those killed in action, those who died from wounds, and deaths resulting from accidents or disease, while some of those initially reported missing were later confirmed as prisoners of war or subsequently repatriated. The book is particularly useful because it presents these casualties at regimental level, allowing the reader to see the human cost of the conflict across individual units. For military historians and genealogists, this makes it a practical research tool for tracing the wartime service and fate of particular soldiers. The fierce nature of the fighting is illustrated by actions such as the Battle of the Imjin River in April 1951, when the 1st Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment, made its famous and costly stand against overwhelming Chinese forces. Such events provide an important context for the names and casualty figures recorded in the book. Although primarily a reference work rather than a narrative history, Casualties Sustained by British Army in the Korean War 1950-53 has considerable historical value. By bringing together contemporary casualty information and organising it by regiment, it provides researchers with a direct link to the men who served and, in many cases, paid the ultimate price. It is therefore a useful addition to any collection devoted to the British Army, the Korean War, or military genealogy.
