The Story of the Zulu Campaign by Major Waller Ashe and Captain the Hon. E. V. Wyatt-Edgell offers a distinctive cavalryman's perspective on the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. Although published under both names, Major Waller Ashe was effectively the principal compiler and author. Not himself a participant in the campaign, he drew upon newspapers, Parliamentary Papers and, most importantly, the journals, notes and sketches supplied by officers serving in Zululand. Among his principal correspondents was Captain Wyatt-Edgell, a fellow cavalryman who kept Ashe closely informed from his arrival in Durban in April 1879 until his death at the Battle of Ulundi in July. First published in 1880, the work is now scarce outside major libraries. This facsimile reprint provides welcome access to a valuable contemporary account, particularly for those interested in the cavalry, logistics and day-to-day realities of the Zulu Campaign.
