Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

Marching on Tanga (with General Smuts in East Africa) is a vivid firsthand account of the East African Campaign of the First World War, written by the English author and physician Francis Brett Young (1884-1954). First Published in 1917, it draws upon Young's experiences as a medical officer with the 2nd Rhodesia Regiment during General Jan Smuts' campaign against German forces in East Africa. Young offers a compelling account of the realities of campaigning in some of the most difficult conditions of the war. His descriptions capture the relentless heat, jungle terrain, shortages of supplies and the debilitating effects of tropical disease, revealing the enormous physical toll placed upon the troops. At the same time, his medical background provides an unusually perceptive perspective on the illness, exhaustion and hardship that accompanied the fighting. The book is equally notable for its literary quality. Young's poetic yet remarkably accurate descriptions of the East African landscape bring the campaign vividly to life, while his account of Smuts' operations avoids romanticising the strategic difficulties and frustrations faced by the Allied forces. The result is both an engaging personal narrative and a valuable record of the realities of jungle warfare. Described by military historian Cyril Falls as "one of the comparatively rare classics of the War," the book was awarded his highest rating of three stars, denoting a work of "superlative merit." Marching on Tanga remains a particularly evocative account of the East African Campaign, combining the observations of a medical officer with the literary talents of one of the war's most accomplished writers.
