Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

Narrative of a Private Soldier in His Majesty's 92nd Regiment of Foot (1798-1801) is a rare and valuable early nineteenth-century memoir by George Billany, offering an unusually personal account of life as a rank-and-file soldier during some of the British Army's most demanding campaigns. Billany recounts his service during the Irish Rebellion of 1798, the arduous expedition to Holland in 1799 and the campaign in Egypt in 1801. His narrative provides a vivid picture of the realities of campaigning, from combat and harsh climates to inadequate provisions, logistical difficulties and the rigours of military discipline. Particularly valuable is the perspective of the ordinary soldier. Rather than concentrating solely on commanders and major battles, Billany records the daily hardships, routines and experiences of men serving in the ranks. His unvarnished observations offer a rare insight into the human experience of British military service during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars.
