The 4th Indian Infantry Division, famed as the 'Red Eagle Division', was formed in Egypt in 1939 and became the first Indian division to serve overseas in the Second World War. A diverse formation of British and Indian troops, it fought across nine campaigns and some 15,000 miles, from East Africa, Eritrea and Syria to the Western Desert, Tunisia, Italy and Greece. Its distinguished record included Keren and Cassino, the capture of some 150,000 prisoners, the surrender of General von Arnim in Tunisia, and more than 1,000 honours, including four Victoria Crosses.
