Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

Best remembered in the UK as a poet, Walter de la Mare produced this novel in 1921, and it received the plaudit of being the first winner of the James Tait Memorial Prize A book that deserves to be in print, and one that will attract a modern readership Quotes from Angela Carter, Alison Lurie and Rebecca West testify to novel's quality. 'The novel is a haunting, elegiac, misanthropic, occasionally perverse study of estrangement and isolation.' It is an unusual story, and written about a time when a young, unmarried woman was an outcast from society, dependent in one way or another on the whims of others. It also clearly, though not explicitly, tells of the love of one woman for another. Written in the early 1920's it is set in late Victorian England. It is a big book for a small subject... The whole of 'The Memoirs of a Midget' may be a fantasy, but it deals in painful realities. Not such a small subject after all.--Margaret Reynolds The Times (London) January 2009
