The original of this 14-volume facsimile reprint is held by the Department of Printed Books, Imperial War Museum, who hold the largest collection of these references known to exist. Contains rare information (approximately 100,000 entries) on many soldiers who were later classified as "No Known Grave". Company/platoon information is shown, which is difficult to establish elsewhere - extremely useful when used in conjunction with WO95 War Diaries. A valuable resource to search, even for those historians who thought that they had exhausted all WW1 records, and perhaps adding a rare footnote to an individual's record. A list of wounded and missing (at that particular time) British, Australian, Canadian and South African personnel in all theatres of war about whom enquiries were made. It also contains enquiries for details of death and burial of all those listed as killed. Originally the names were grouped into corps/regiments and in the case of infantry there is, where available, information as to which battalion, company and platoon the casualty belonged to. There is similarly unit identification for Corps and Services, such as brigade and battery for Royal Artillery and field company for Royal Engineers. The "No Known Grave" casualties that are commemorated on the WW1 memorials are a telling story of the Great War, and they must have given their families many months or even years of false hope that their loved one would eventual be found alive. Sample entry: name, rank, number, unit/regiment, battalion, company/platoon, missing-from date. Some have notes (sample: "Officially reported K, May 5 since had letters returned marked 'Hospital'").
