Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

What does it mean when women become soldiers? At a time when the presence of women in the military is often celebrated as a sign of progress, The Conundrum of the Female Soldiers challenges us to think again. Drawing on two decades of research, this compelling volume reveals how the inclusion of women in armed forces both disrupts and reinforces the gendered foundations of militarism. Moving beyond simple narratives of empowerment, the book uncovers the deeper assumptions about masculinity, femininity, protection, and power that shape military institutions and public perceptions of war. From Japan's Self-Defense Forces to contemporary global conflicts, it shows how women soldiers occupy a complex and often contradictory position-- at once symbols of change and participants in enduring systems of power. Sharp, thought-provoking, and deeply relevant, this book is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the evolving relationship between gender, war, and society.
