Bernes has an extensive record of public presentations, both as a poet and political theorist; quite unusually, his work often manages to join these audiences together in ways last seen during the era of anti-Vietnam war organizing. His anticapitalist politics will allow this book to reach a much larger audience. Bernes has sustained engagement with radical politics both on and off the page. He was actively involved in Occupy Oakland as well as the University of California protests (he was one of 13 targeted with legal action by UC administration following the November 9 police riot at UC Berkeley). His first book was unusually well received for a first book on a small press, selling out its full print run. It was reviewed in multiple venues, including The Believer and Salon. His poetry has already received important scholarly attention, appearing in journal articles, monographs, and multiple syllabi.
