If eyes are the windows to the soul, then award-winning historian Lochlainn Seabrook's literary work, Heroes of the Southern Confederacy: The Illustrated Book of Confederate Officials, Soldiers, and Civilians, offers a glimpse into the heart of the Old South.Featuring some 1,200 antique photographs and drawings, this remarkable visual volume humanizes the traditional 19th-Century Southerner, deepening the reader's understanding of the Confederacy and her people: who they were, what they believed, and why they fought.Contemplate the faces, expressions, and clothing of hundreds of men, women, and children in this unique "you-are-there" style book, which brings home the realities of Left-wing U.S. President Abraham Lincoln's attack on the Constitution and the American people through rare images dating from the Victorian Era.Where possible, faded photographs have been carefully repaired, cleaned, and enhanced by the author. Feel the pathos of the antebellum, bellum, and postbellum periods come alive through the striking portraits of traditional Southerners who endured one of the world's bloodiest, most destructive, and most unnecessary conflicts. The courage, perseverance, and American values that carried these rugged individuals through Lincoln's War continue to inspire patriotic interest in the Confederate Battle Flag and the Southern Cause (conservatism). As with so many of Col. Seabrook's books, readers will find Heroes of the Southern Confederacy a transformative experience.Included are images of 430 Confederate generals and a complete list of all 474 Confederate generals (most officially confirmed, some not), along with numerous Confederate civilians and lower-ranked soldiers, many still unidentified. The author also provides a detailed introduction, comprehensive index, extensive bibliography, footnotes, educational appendices, information on the Confederate cabinet and military ranking system, and fascinating biographical details on Confederates from every walk of life.An enjoyable browse for casual readers and Civil War buffs, this unique pictorial reference also preserves valuable material for historians, researchers, genealogists, Southern heritage interpreters, educators, living-history actors, costume designers, and Civil War reenactors.Award-winning historian Lochlainn Seabrook is the author of more than 100 nonfiction books on American history, the Civil War, the Confederacy, and Southern history and culture. His works include Lincoln's War; The Unholy Crusade; The Great Yankee Coverup; Confederacy 101; Confederate Flag Facts; Women in Gray; The Constitution of the Confederate States of America Explained; and A Rebel Born.
