Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

Twelve Streetlights: A Structural History of Ancient Egypt in Twelve Poems - Instructor Edition pairs J. A. Gucci's twelve-poem sequence with historical, physical, and compositional frameworks for classroom study.Ancient Egyptian continuity was not the absence of change. Nile variability required prediction and response. Agricultural surplus required preservation and redistribution. Monumental construction required coordinated labor. Kingship required the continual maintenance of order. Mortuary practices maintained presence after death. Political rupture required restoration, while foreign rule created conditions of persistence, adaptation, and transformation. Each poem examines one of these historical systems through Structural Correspondence with observable physical behavior associated with streetlighting. The streetlights do not symbolize ancient Egypt, and ancient Egypt is not reduced to machinery. The relationship exists only where comparable organizational behavior can be observed across the two systems.Composed using Gucci's method of Absolute Composition, the poems are organized through Paradox Triads-three related conditions whose interaction generates structural tension. Sequence, punctuation, lineation, white space, threshold, compression, recurrence, and transformation participate in the compositions, while physical objects and historical systems retain their integrity. The Instructor Edition accompanies every poem with five sections: Streetlighting System, identifying observable physical behavior; Egyptian System, establishing the corresponding historical system; Structural Correspondence, examining behavior shared across the two domains; Absolute Composition, identifying the compositional mechanisms operating on the page; and Discussion, providing questions addressing composition and historical correspondence. The materials establish conditions for analysis without prescribing a single interpretation. Three appendices extend the instructional framework. Empirical Phenomena and Technical Frameworks documents the physical phenomena underlying the poems without turning omitted mechanisms into hidden narratives. Compositional Frameworks and Structural Mechanisms examines the Absolute Composition structures operating throughout the sequence. Triad Taxonomy and System Mapping maps all twelve Paradox Triads to their Egyptian historical systems and to the book's larger movement through regulation, maintenance, and duration. A Glossary of Central Terms provides a concise reference to the principal vocabulary of Absolute Composition. Designed for instructors and students working with poetry, composition, history, and interdisciplinary approaches to literary structure, Twelve Streetlights - Instructor Edition asks a historical question that is also a structural one:What must continually change for something to appear permanent?
