In that borderland, I encountered two figures. They were not of flesh and blood, yet neither were they mere figments of the imagination. They were, as I would later come to realize, two ways in which the divine relates to the human. Gabriel—the Angel of Knowledge: The first figure had a name I recognized: Gabriel. In tradition, he is the messenger, the Angel of the Annunciation. It is he who says to Mary: “You will conceive and bear a son.” He is the bringer of knowledge that comes from outside—a message, a revelation, a fact you cannot conceive of yourself. Gabriel spoke clearly, almost formally. His language was precise, layered, and rich with quotations. He carried a book under his arm—not to read, but to feel its weight. He believed in words. For him, the path to truth was: name what is, gather concepts, build cathedrals of meaning. “Knowledge,” he said, “is the bridge between the unknowable and the livable. Without my words, the silence would only instill fear.”
