From Classical Wave Theory to Modern Simulation From today’s perspective, the decades-long neglect of Uller’s wave kinematics has proven to be a failure in the history of science. As recent comparisons show, his mathematical-physical approach has universal validity: The principles of his wave kinematics can be coherently applied to fundamental problems in modern physics – ranging from the structural features of string theory to the thermodynamics of Hawking radiation and the classical hydrodynamics of water waves. In summarizing his work, Uller (1907) lays the foundation for a non-linear, background-dependent wave kinematics. He contrasts the classical, idealized propagation velocity with systems in which wave propagation dynamically modifies the underlying static field. The phenomenon he describes – wherein the field is taken up at the wave front and laid out at the rear – implies a causal feedback between the wave's geometry and the supporting medium. This coupling results in the propagation velocity becoming a function of both the temporal source characteristics and the wave's transient spatial form. It is precisely this mathematical and conceptual flexibility that allows Uller’s kinematic approach to be applied beyond the scope of classical seismology. The dependence of the wave form on the background field, as postulated by Uller, finds a modern counterpart in quantum field- theoretic processes in curved spacetimes – such as Hawking radiation – and in the interacting excitation states of string theory. With the launch of the Journal of Applied Wave Kinematics, Instituto Romeral bridges the gap between the historical foundations of physics and the numerical simulations of the future. A central focus of our research series is the revitalization and further development of the fundamental work of Karl Uller (1872–1959).
