The Boldt Castle on Heart Island in the Thousand Islands resembles those of Europe. At the turn of the century, George C. Boldt, millionaire owner of the world-famous Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City, set out to build this full-size Rhineland castle. The grandiose structure was to be a display of his love for his wife Louise, who happened to suddenly die. Boldt never returned to the island. For 73 years, the castle was left to the mercy of the elements and vandals. The Thousand Islands Bridge Authority acquired the property in 1977 and following this, several million dollars have been spent to rehabilitating, restoring and improving the Boldt castle for the enjoyment of international tourists.
