In recent decades, new discoveries and research have contributed significantly to our understanding of the emergence, development, layout, and features of Greek sanctuaries. Helmut Kyrieleis has made a major contribution to research into early Greek sanctuaries through his pioneering excavations and investigations at the Heraion on Samos and the sanctuary of Zeus at Olympia. In celebration of his 80th birthday, archaeologists and ancient historians from seven countries gathered from April 19 to 21, 2018, at his former place of work, the Athens Department of the German Archaeological Institute. Under the title “New Research on Early Greek Sanctuaries, 12th–5th Century BC,” 37 contributions honored Kyrieleis' scientific work and presented recent findings from ongoing projects. The topics ranged from fundamental questions of continuity between the Late Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age to the role of Early Iron Age ›rulers' seats‹ as places of ceremonial feasts, the character and sequence of elite sacrificial rituals, and the principles and programs of figurative decoration in sanctuaries. Regional studies on Athens and Attica, the Peloponnese, Central and Northern Greece, Crete, the Aegean Islands, and Ionian Western Asia not only present new aspects of major sanctuaries of supraregional importance, but also introduce smaller, partly newly discovered sanctuaries of regional character that significantly expand our picture of the sacred topography of Greece. This volume brings together these contributions and offers an updated overview of research on early Greek sanctuaries – indispensable for anyone interested in the religious, artistic, and cultural history of early Greece.
