It was not only the early ‹Mercury‹ letters (1786–1788) but also the ‹Versuch einer neuen Theorie des menschlichen Vorstellungsvermögens‹ (Essay towards a New Theory of the Faculty of Representation) (1789) and the revision work done on the ‹Elementarphilosophie‹ (Elementary Philosophy) which proved to have, according to Lazzari, a very practical motivation. This study provides an interpretation of Reinhold‹s ‹Grundlinien der Theorie des Begehrungsvermögens‹ (Basis of the Theory of the Capacity for Desire) and its position within the ‹Essay‹ of 1789. The second part of this work deals with the most important changes in Reinhold‹s philosophy up to 1792, including the conceptual distinction between will and practical reason and the upgrading of common human understanding when compared to philosophizing reason, and in conclusion contends that Reinhold had already laid the foundations for his ‹Elementary Philosophy‹ in the summer of 1792.
