This work addresses the complexity of battery cell production by modeling the interdependencies among the various elements of production systems, such as the process chain, processes, and products, with a focus on material and energy flows. A model-based methodology is proposed for digitally representing and analyzing production systems to assess energy and material efficiency. This methodology combines discrete event and agent-based models, also enabling the integration of complementary models. The modular and flexible approach allows different stakeholders, such as environmental experts, process and product designers, to identify hidden interdependencies in various scenarios and make informed, sustainability-oriented decisions. The proposed methodology is prototypically implemented in Python, and its applicability is demonstrated through three case studies evaluating production configurations, process technologies, and product designs in terms of energy and material efficiency.
