This publication is the English edition of the catalogue published in 2010 for the exhibition New Images of Age(ing) (NAL NF Supplementum Nr. 23). People are living longer and the proportion of older people in society is increasing. Consequently demographic change has become an important social topic. “Ageing” impacts the lives of every individual as well as our society, its prosperity and its nature.

As a result the Leopoldina has been looking at the topic of “Ageing in Germany” for some time. The image of ageing and the existing roles of ageing are still being viewed, to a large extent, from a traditional standpoint. Impending change requires a change in perspective. The catalogue reveals images of ageing that are rising up to the challenges and opportunities of ageing for individuals and society in different ways. Thus it uses an artistic approach to supplement, through a dialogue with society, the Academy’s scientific publications on the issues of ageing.
