This doctoral thesis investigates the complex dynamics of cloud cavitation about a NACA 0015 hydrofoil as the incidence is varied. Varying the incidence reveals a range of cloud cavitation phenomena and underlying mechanisms. The main drivers of cloud cavitation are re-entrant flow and condensation shockwaves, which also interact in a complex manner. This study contributes to the understanding of cloud cavitation in pumps, ship propellers and heart valves, where cavitation remains a limiting factor in the operation of fluid systems. The experiments were conducted in the closed, recirculating, variable-pressure water tunnel at the Cavitation Research Laboratory, University of Tasmania, using synchronised high-speed photography and a six-component force balance. Modal decomposition methods, including spectral proper orthogonal decomposition (SPOD), were applied to the high-speed photographs to identify coherent structures. Transient behaviour was analysed using wavelet transform, revealing different shedding modes occurring simultaneously and/or intermittently, which were then examined in detail using space-time diagrams. This thesis provides a basis for the understanding and controlling of cloud cavitation as it occurs in technical systems.
