This study by Joseph Gariolo presents a comparison between the texts of the two poems by Lope de Vega’s «Jerusalén conquistada» and Torquato Tasso’s «Gerusalemme liberata» in order to find out which passages of ‘Liberata’ influence the ‘Conquistada’ and to what extent. In spite of dealing with the same subject (the Crusades) and the same geographic places (Palestine and the Holy City) Gariolo demonstrate that Lope’s was never a menial imitation, as occurred with other Spanish imitators of Tasso. During the period of the Renaissance, the imitation of classical models (and the Italian masterpieces were considered models) was not only permitted, but almost demanded. Thus, Lope, even in imitating, innovated artistically and created new elements for Spanish epic poetry of the Golden Age.
