During the use phase, apparel is subject to ageing processes. The laundry care process is considered to be the cause of undesirable changes in properties and microplastics of textile origin in wastewater. Clothing products acquire their properties in the manufacturing phase. The so-called textile chain is composed of several individual steps in which decisions are made that influence the properties of the intermediate and final products. Regarding the laundry care process, there are different standardisations, knowledge of experts from industry and research and the real consumer behaviour. Characteristics of the three aspects are researched, documented and evaluated according to criteria developed in the work. Using an iterative process cycle, a method is developed step by step that allows apparel to be treated with a standardised, household laundry care process and the changes in properties to be recorded. The result is a procedure plan describing the near-household laundering method. For validation, the method is carried out, the results are documented and an example is given of how two different laundry items change with regard to their textile-physical properties over a life cycle of 30 washing cycles. The validation proves that the method for household washing leads to meaningful results regarding the ageing of apparel. With the developed method, statements can be made that differ from the standardisations and procedures in the literature due to their proximity to the household.
