The functionality of wastewater disposal, as part of the critical infrastructure, is a prerequisite for a functioning society. However, social and climatic change are leading to constantly changing boundary conditions for wastewater disposal. Due to climate change, extreme weather events are occurring more frequently. Heavy rainfall events in particular lead to an overloading of the sewage systems and consequently to a discharge of untreated wastewater into the environment. In addition to the discharge of health-threatening pathogens, this results in a threat to the water ecology. At the same time, rising energy costs and the need to conserve energy resources require a critical look at the energy used to transport wastewater. In order to adapt wastewater disposal to such developments, structural and control modifications can be implemented. However, structural modifications are associated with high logistical and financial costs. An alternative or supplement is the use of load-dependent control systems, which enables optimized operation of existing systems. This paper presents the development of a control method that enables loaddependent, energy-optimized and load-reduced operation of wastewater pumping stations by using prediction models. The control method was designed in such a way that it can be adapted to different wastewater pumping stations. The perspective implementation of the control method in the real infrastructure was favored by considering realistic, operational boundary conditions and safety-relevant requirements from the real infrastructure. The potentials determined in the course of experimental investigations through the use of the developed control method show a significant reduction in the discharge volume and the energy requirement. The experimental investigations were carried out in a real pumping station in the test hall of the Department of Fluid System Dynamics, TU Berlin and under consideration of realistic conditions. These potentials showed that load-dependent control can also contribute to optimizing the operation of existing wastewater infrastructure under realistic conditions.
