What does it mean to be human? It is, in fact, profoundly beautiful. This collection of figurative paintings draws from the holdings of the Hoki Museum, a rare institution dedicated to hyperrealist painting, presenting a powerful selection of portraits of men and women that stir the soul. Capturing moments of beauty with extraordinary precision, this volume showcases a remarkable collaboration among leading contemporary realist painters. Featuring a total of 20 artists, the book includes new, recent, and representative works, including pieces created in 2020. Featured Artists (in Japanese alphabetical order) Hiroshi Ikushima / Kenichiro Ishiguro / Takeshi Isoe / Hideo Oya / Makoto Ogiso / Osamu Ogiso / Fumihiko Gomi / Ryo Shiotani / Nobuyuki Shimamura / Atsushi Suwa / Yuna Tsuru / Tatsuhito Tomiho / Tadahiko Nakayama / Hiroshi Noda / Takaya Fujita / Kei Mieno / Sosuke Morimoto / Makoto Yamamoto / Xiaogang Li / Ryo Watari What is a human being? What is life? Hoki Museum Opened in November 2010 in Midori Ward, Chiba City, the Hoki Museum is one of the world's few museums dedicated exclusively to realist painting. Its collection comprises approximately 480 works by around 60 artists, including masters such as Hiroshi Noda and Sosuke Morimoto, with around 120 works displayed at any given time. A highlight of the collection is the "My Masterpiece" series, in which selected artists create large-scale works (equivalent to approximately 100-size canvases) every three years. The museum building, located adjacent to the lush Showa no Mori park, features five gently curved gallery corridors stacked across three levels (two underground and one above ground), with the outermost section extending 30 meters in a dramatic cantilever. The building received the Japan Architecture Award in 2011.-- (6/10/2026 12:00:00 AM)
