En ellos decantó el último aliento de un tiempo que vio materializar y derrumbarse, un mundo de aspiraciones que se extinguió con su inevitable carga de gloria y decepción. 'Fracasé. Fue mi culpa. Lo reconozco. / Pero en manera alguna pido perdón o indulgencia: / Eso me pasa por intentar lo imposible'.

José Emilio Pacheco wrote the poems gathered in Siglo pasado (Desenlace) (1999-2000) at the close of the millennium. In them, he distilled the final breath of an era he had seen both rise and crumble--a world of aspirations extinguished, weighed with both glory and disillusionment. "I failed. It was my fault. I admit it. / But I ask neither pardon nor indulgence: / That's what I get for attempting the impossible."
