ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

A powerful look at the role of women, motherhood, and family

At seventy-six years old, María Claro's life was filled with routines. Living in Iowa, the calm of her old age is disrupted when one of her granddaughters manages to track her down. Forced to revisit a life she believed she had left behind, María's scars are reopened, revealing the painful meaning behind La Mala Madre, the art installation that earned her reputation as an artist. At the same time, young Tiny von Striker, María's protégée and close friend, must confront her true feelings about a family that never understood her and that she has not seen for fifteen years.

Mala madre is an exploration of toxic family bonds, where guilt, freedom, and the struggle to build one's own identity become the guiding threads in the lives of its protagonists and throughout this powerful novel.

María Paz Rodríguez surprises readers with an unflinching examination of women, motherhood, and family, while further establishing her voice as one of the most acclaimed authors in contemporary Chilean literature. "In this regard, María Paz Rodríguez stands out for creating a narrative focused on the ongoing processes of women's repression and possible emancipation," writes Patricia Espinosa.
