ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

These ghost stories are also love stories

'A wonderful book. Hustvedt's gift lies in her ability to write about the most devastating emotions with extraordinary clarity, restraint, and beauty. The result is a deeply moving work, raw in its portrayal of loss and yet luminous with love.' Sarah Waters

As he was nearing death, Paul Auster told his wife that he wanted to become a ghost, to return and see how she was doing, what she would write after his departure, or how his grandson Miles would grow. And that is what he has become for Siri Hustvedt, a presence that is always tangible and comforting: in the smell of his tobacco at home, in the pages of his books, and in the memory of a love story and an intellectual communion that lasted forty three years.

In her most personal work, Hustvedt reconstructs their legendary bond through the searing texture of grief and the solace of an eternal love. Poised between diary and literary narrative, the book draws on invaluable unpublished documents, from the notes they exchanged over decades to Paul Auster's final writings in the form of letters to his grandson.
