Leisure activities play a particularly significant role in residential long-term therapy for drug addicts and are undoubtedly a key component of the overall treatment process. The organisation of leisure time should not be limited to the unrestrained and thoughtless consumption of television programmes and other electronic media; those affected should learn to make reasonably constructive use of their free time and be introduced to meaningful, creative leisure pursuits. A basic distinction can be made between 'supervised leisure' and 'self-organised leisure'. Both are closely interlinked and interdependent; however, self-organised leisure accounts for a much larger proportion of the total time and is likely to be of greater qualitative significance. For this reason, this specific study focuses on the unstructured, freely organised leisure time of male adolescents and young adults who are staying at the 'Waldheimat' youth welfare facility, a therapeutic unit run by the Grüner Kreis association.
