Biodiversity of Wild Bees in Kinshasa: The Case of the University of Kinshasa

The study to estimate the biodiversity of wild bees was conducted at the University of Kinshasa, specifically in the vicinity of the Faculty of Sciences and in the Faculty of Sciences' experimental garden, during the period from May 17, 2009, to May 30, 2010. aimed first to determine the diversity of this bee fauna and second to understand the phenology of wild bees. A total of 59 individuals were captured, grouped into 17 species and 8 genera, and then classified into 3 families. According to the Shannon-Weaver diversity index (H'), Hulbert's expected value and Pielou's evenness index (E), our study site exhibits high diversity, which, from an ecological perspective, reflects the balance of the environment (H': 4 bits, E: 0.91, and Es: 16.03 species/100 specimens). Regarding the phenology of wild bee families, it reveals that their populations vary by month and are also influenced by environmental factors and the availability of floral resources. However, these populations are well represented in May, when the flowering of the greatest number of plant species is observed.
