Conflicts of interest in the drafting of the Austrian Psychotherapy Act

This study uses qualitative interviews to investigate the history of the Austrian Psychotherapy Act, which came into force in 1990. The legislative process took place mainly during the last quarter of the 20th century. At that time, psychotherapy was booming in Austria. Within the field of psychotherapy, there were - in ascending order of proportion - three professional groups: doctors, psychologists and 'others'. The Austrian Medical Chamber, the Professional Association of Austrian Psychologists, the trade union and the Umbrella Organisation of Austrian Psychotherapeutic Associations played a key role in the legislation's development. Today - some twenty years later - this work aims to provide an explanation for the tensions arising from the conflict over the distribution of roles at that time, the effects of which are still felt today. It also aims to bring this history to life for the next generation working in the field.
