Individual and Family Determinants of Out-of-School Status Among Children Aged 6-11 in Benin

The out-of-school rate for children aged 6-11 remains high in Benin despite policies implemented to eradicate it. In fact, nearly one-quarter of these children were not attending school (23.9%) in 2010, according to the EMICoV survey (INSAE). This study identified the main determinants of this low enrollment rate, which are linked to the child and his or her family. It uses a multidimensional analysis to characterize the types of children aged 6-11 who are likely to be out of school. Finally, it employs the logit model to highlight the impact of various variables on children's out-of-school status. The study's results indicate that the variables "the child's kinship relationship with the head of household," "the child's gender," "neighborhood," "the head of household's ethnicity," and "household size" have a positive effect on out-of-school status among children aged 6-11. In contrast, the variables "child's age," "household head's religion," "household head's sector of employment," "household head's educational level," and "per capita expenditure quintile" have a negative effect on the dependent variable. Poverty is a key determinant of out-of-school status in Benin.
