A Study of a Sample of the Moroccan Population

Peripheral neuroblastoma (PNB) is an extremely heterogeneous paediatric solid tumour responsible for 15 per cent of cancer deaths in children. In Morocco, no epidemiological, molecular or biological studies concerning these tumours have been undertaken. We have therefore sought to review the various clinical and histopathological data, as well as the incidence, survival and mortality rates relating to PNTs. Furthermore, the molecular study phase enabled us to implement the Fluorescence In Situ Hybridisation (FISH) technique, which is universally adopted worldwide, in order to determine the amplification status of the MYCN proto-oncogene, a key prognostic factor in the choice of treatment strategy. MYCN amplification was found in 27.8 per cent of cases. The study of CD44 expression by immunohistochemistry (IHC), meanwhile, revealed that this cell adhesion molecule is a powerful predictor of metastasis, with a positive result indicating the absence of metastatic invasion. The results obtained from these epidemiological and analytical studies were compared with international data.
