POURGHERE (Jatropha curcas): Cultivation and Uses

This three-year study conducted in Tandjilé Province (southwestern Chad) highlights the feasibility of growing jatropha (Jatropha curcas) in the cropping systems of the Sudanese savannas. It also demonstrates its potential as a biofuel and bioinsecticide. Field trials reveal a highly significant effect (p < 0.001) of fertilizers derived from a compost-mycorrhizae mixture on biomass and seed yield. It increases seedling survival rates from 90% to 100% and enhances resistance to water stress in the field during the dry season in the first year of cultivation. It promotes earlier flowering and fruit maturity. Spraying oil (at concentrations of 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%) is effective in reducing attacks on cowpeas by aphids, thrips, and stink bugs. Spreading oilseed cake in the field reduces attacks on peanut crops by millipedes-the main pests of peanut pods at this site-by up to 80%. Ultimately, the cultivation of pourghère heralds a brighter future and opens up opportunities for the development of non-chemical inputs for organic farming in rural areas.
