Much of the income earned comes from so-called informal activities, which are not subject to taxation. Initially, the informal sector consisted only of small-scale activities, such as street shoe shiners. Today, it spans all sectors and includes both small and large businesses. The author illustrates this using the example of Cameroon. He shows that this sector plays a major role in Sub-Saharan Africa. The author attempts to define the concept of informal activity and analyzes the macroeconomic causes and consequences of the informal sector's existence. A field survey provided an overview of a representative sample of this sector in both Douala and Yaoundé. The telecommunications and textile industries are cited as examples of sectors that rely heavily on informal operators to distribute their products. Who are the key players in the informal sector?
