The Tongue Pulls the Trigger argues that language in Sudan's 2023-2026 civil war was not a by-product of violence but one of its engines. Drawing on social media posts, state broadcasts, and interviews, the book traces how colonial-era centre-periphery hierarchies were revived through regional slurs, how conceptual metaphors of disease, vermin, and cooking stripped victims of moral standing, and how algorithmic amplification saturated public discourse with dehumanising speech at unprecedented speed. It examines gendered and sexualised rhetoric used to humiliate and subjugate, contrasts domestic incitement with the sanitised language used for international audiences, and documents the counter-discourse of solidarity and rebuilding that Sudanese civil society generated even amid atrocity. Combining Critical Discourse Analysis, Cognitive Metaphor Theory, and a genocide-risk framework, the authors show these linguistic registers to be recursive rather than discrete, each reinforcing the others. The book closes by calling for linguistic justice as a legitimate signal of impending genocide.
