The banana plant is a very important crop worldwide. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, bananas are a significant source of vitamins for the tribes that consume them as a staple food. The banana plant has a very complex sexual reproduction cycle, and vegetative propagation remains, to date, the only method of propagation used in the DRC, both by farmers and by local breeders. However, even this method of propagation is subject to two major problems that limit the expansion and development of this crop, namely, the low propagation rate leading to a shortage of propagation material, and viral diseases spread through the conventional vegetative propagation practised by farmers. In vitro production and the use of banana vitroplants as propagation material represent a promising natural means of combating infestations caused by vegetative propagation. The aim of this study was to evaluate in vitro culture techniques and to establish suitable culture media for producing healthy vitroplants.
