Prenatal exposure to various toxic agents is generally studied by considering the placenta as a barrier between the mother and the fetus; we consider it as a target organ for toxic agents. To this end, we have selected a trophoblast cell model suitable for toxicological studies. Clinically, pregnancy-related pathologies are associated with changes in the secretion of the placental lactogen hormone hPL and the chorionic gonadotropin hormone hCG. Our in vitro studies have established a link between exposure to micropollutants (mono(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, an endocrine disruptor, and benzo(a)pyrene, a carcinogen) and these clinical observations. The biomarkers of hormonal secretion (hPL and hyperglycosylated hCG) and degeneration (activation of the P2X7 purinoreceptor) that we have identified make it possible to detect exposure and the risk associated with exposure to pollutants.
