Assessment of the diversity of the Pteridaceae in Togo

The Pteridaceae constitute the largest family of ferns in Togo in terms of their species and genus diversity. Like the country's other fern families, they have not been sufficiently studied and there is no identification key available for them. A taxonomic and nomenclatural revision of this family was carried out as part of this study to establish a reliable and useful knowledge base using the Xper² software and to centralise all available information on the group. An identification key has been created to facilitate the identification of taxa. A reassessment of the diversity, ecology and conservation status of the Pteridaceae was also carried out using recent field data and herbarium specimens. A new species for the Togolese flora was collected as part of this study. This is Pteris similis Kuhn, found in a gallery forest at Dikpéléou. This collection confirmed the presence of this species in Togo and brought the diversity of the Pteridaceae to 17 species.
