Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) provides a livelihood for tens of millions of people in sub-Saharan Africa, but remains almost entirely excluded from formal financing channels. This book identifies four structural shortcomings at the root of this exclusion-lack of usable collateral, insufficient financial information, a mismatch in scale between due diligence costs and the amounts sought, and institutional distance-and documents their concrete consequences: persistent informality, costly informal financing, chronic under-mechanization, and tax losses for governments.
