This thesis examines the topic of burnout amongst headteachers. There is still no standard definition of the term 'burnout'. Burnout is now found across all occupational sectors, yet it is difficult to recognise or diagnose. The theoretical section defines the phenomenon of burnout and describes its causes and symptoms. Symptoms are described in order to identify them during the structured interviews. It is also important to understand the stages through which this condition progresses and the potential consequences for the individual. In the empirical section of the thesis, qualitative structured interviews are used to investigate the occupational stresses to which headteachers are exposed, which could lead to burnout syndrome. The sheer volume of school-related tasks that a headteacher has to manage is extremely stressful, quite apart from the considerable time commitment involved. It is also important to consider the recognition that school leaders receive from colleagues working at the school, from higher authorities, from parents, as well as from pupils or external organisations.
