Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

In these short, luminous pieces, the Alvarez Quintero brothers portrayed the city not as a postcard, but as daily life: courtyards where people whisper and wait, taverns that shelter and disenchant, streets full of voices, grace, and contradiction. Far from clichés, their works are imbued with humanity, tenderness, social criticism, and an admirable precision in capturing the speech and feelings of a people. This anthology brings together some of their most representative pieces, those in which the intimate Seville of the turn of the century beats most strongly: a city that still lived between the old and the new, between celebration and resignation. In contrast to caricature, here there is dignity. In contrast to mockery, there is compassion. In contrast to empty nostalgia, there is memory. Alongside his short plays, the collection also includes speeches and poetic interventions that reveal the deep love they felt for their city and their attentive knowledge of the Seville they lived in and wanted to preserve. For decades, they were judged lightly, as if popular success invalidated their literary value. But one need only read them calmly to discover a living theater, written with ear and soul, where laughter and sorrow coexist as in life itself.
