In October 1934, in the midst of a passionate affair, Otto Rank gave Anaïs Nin the ring he had received from Freud in 1913 as a member of the so-called secret committee, after she had given him her father's ring. This intimate and symbolic gesture is the starting point for a reflection on the decline of the father figure in modern culture and father-child relationships. Ramón Echevarría organizes this reflection based on the lives and writings of its three protagonists: Sigmund Freud, Otto Rank, and Anaïs Nin. First, he contrasts Freud's and Rank's ideas on father-child relationships, the role of the father in the individuation of the child, and the origin of the patriarchal family. Then, he examines the rupture between them, marked by theoretical disagreements and personal conflicts typical of a father-child relationship. Finally, he analyzes the therapeutic and later romantic relationship between Nin and Rank, in which she searched for an ideal father who would compensate for the wounds she had received from her own.
